WhatsApp stickers not showing up: what actually causes it

A short list of real causes, in the order worth checking — plus the two cases that are limits rather than faults.

Published

If an imported sticker pack is missing from WhatsApp, the cause is almost always one of five things: WhatsApp was not installed when you exported, you dismissed WhatsApp's own confirmation prompt, the tray has not refreshed yet, the free tier truncated or refused the pack, or you reinstalled WhatsApp and third-party packs went with it. Work down the list below in order — the first two account for most cases and take seconds to rule out.

Everything on this page is a cause we can actually stand behind. Where a symptom has no cause we can confirm, we say so rather than padding the list.

1. WhatsApp has to be installed before you export

This is the most common one and the easiest to miss, because the export can look like it started normally. A sticker pack is handed directly from one app to the other — there is no upload, no cloud step, and nothing waiting in a queue for WhatsApp to arrive later.

Fix: install WhatsApp, open it once and finish its setup, then run the export again. If WhatsApp is not installed, StickerBridge tells you so instead of pretending to send — if you did not see that message, this probably is not your problem.

2. WhatsApp's own confirmation prompt was dismissed

The hand-off opens WhatsApp and asks you to confirm adding the pack. If you swiped away, tapped outside it, or switched apps before confirming, nothing was added. The export looks finished on the StickerBridge side because it did its part; WhatsApp simply never accepted.

Fix: export again and complete WhatsApp's prompt. If the pack was split into several parts, note that each part gets its own prompt — confirming the first one and dismissing the rest leaves you with part 1 only, which is a very convincing imitation of a bug.

3. The tray needs a moment

Occasionally the pack is genuinely there but the sticker tray has not caught up.

Fix: close the sticker panel and reopen it. If that does not do it, fully quit WhatsApp and reopen it. Give this one about a minute before assuming the export failed — it costs nothing and it rules out a whole category of false alarms.

4. It is the free tier, not a failure

Two situations here look like breakage but are limits working as designed. Both are worth checking before troubleshooting anything else, because no amount of retrying changes them.

You got nothing at all, from a video pack

Video sticker packs export zero stickers on the free tier. Not a smaller pack — nothing. If the pack you tried was a video pack and you are not on Pro, this is the explanation. Pro is what lifts it.

You got some stickers, but not all of them

A free export produces one truncated pack, never multiple parts. Up to 30 stickers from a static pack, up to 12 from an animated pack. If you counted exactly 12 or exactly 30 and the source pack was larger, nothing went wrong — that is the cap.

Splitting a large pack into several WhatsApp packs is a Pro behaviour. There is a fuller breakdown of all of this in the main import guide, and the animated and video cases specifically in the animated sticker guide.

5. You reinstalled WhatsApp

Third-party sticker packs do not survive reinstalling WhatsApp. If the packs were there and then were not, and a reinstall happened in between, that is why.

Fix: re-run the export. There is no restore for this — the packs have to be added again.

6. The pack was too large for WhatsApp's per-sticker size limit

WhatsApp enforces a maximum file size per sticker, and requires at least 3 valid stickers in a pack. A very detailed pack can end up with too many stickers over that ceiling, in which case there is nothing valid to send and the export fails rather than producing a partial pack.

You would have seen an error saying so, and retrying will not help — the stickers are the size they are. The numbers behind this are in WhatsApp sticker size and format requirements.

What we are not going to tell you to try

A lot of advice on this topic is guesswork dressed up as a fix. We have left out anything we cannot support: clearing caches, toggling permissions unrelated to stickers, reinstalling the converter, or changing settings that have nothing to do with sticker packs. If your symptom is not on the list above, the honest answer is that we do not know the cause — email support with the pack name and what you saw, and that is more useful than trying random steps.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the sticker tray in WhatsApp?

Open any chat, tap the emoji or sticker icon next to the message field, and switch to the stickers tab. Imported packs appear there alongside the rest.

My pack imported but only part of it arrived. Why?

On the free tier an export produces one truncated pack — up to 30 stickers from a static pack, up to 12 from an animated pack — rather than splitting the remainder into further packs. Exactly 12 or exactly 30 from a larger source pack is the cap, not a failure. Splitting a large pack across several WhatsApp packs is a Pro behaviour.

Nothing at all came through from a video sticker pack.

Video packs cannot be exported on the free tier — the result is zero stickers, not a reduced set. Retrying will not change it; Pro lifts the limit.

Do sticker packs survive reinstalling WhatsApp?

No. Third-party sticker packs are lost when WhatsApp is reinstalled and have to be added again. There is no restore for them.

Do I need WhatsApp installed before importing?

Yes. The pack is handed directly from one app to the other, so there is no queued import waiting for WhatsApp to appear later. If WhatsApp is not installed, the export tells you rather than failing silently.
